Centering the clay ...

Firmly place the clay in the center of the wheel and pat it down as it slowly turns. Using one hand as the press "down" and the other as the press "inward" gently force the clay to the center with both hands plus some body weight. This first step is critical and a check with your finger should not feel the slightest wobble of the clay as it spins.
